"Love is the doctrine of this church..."
Hello! My name is STEPHEN YORK and I am the pastor of the Stonington United Methodist Church. Thanks for reading this Facebook post! I am a graduate of Norwich University (B.A.) and Starr King School for the Ministry (M.Div.) I also attended the United Theological Seminary of Dayton, Ohio, doing doctoral studies. Are you looking for ways to be spiritual without being narrow-minded? Would you like to be a part of a community that encourages your own creativity, holistic growth, and spirituality...one that uses a variety of many sources: literature, stories, dreamwork, as well as the Bible? IF your answer is "yes," I want to personally invite you to the worship service on any Sunday, @ 10:30 a.m.!" FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS......... WHAT TIME DO YOU MEET? Sunday @ 10:30 a.m. (The service is about 60-70 minutes in length, followed by a coffee hour for the whole family). DO YOU HAVE OTHER TIMES? Yes, we do! **LIFE! Group: Conversations with Stephen on Thursday @ 6:30-8:00 p.m. This is an open group, you can come once or every week. We talk about your interests and questions about life, spirituality, the arts, literature, the Bible, God, and anything else. We do not discuss partisan politics or promote/discuss political candidates. We do discuss local issues of a non-partisan nature. Many of us are on town boards and committees and are active in community service. **TRANSFORMATIONS: Conversations with Stephen meets on Sunday morning @ 9:30-10:10 a.m. before the worship service. This provides an opportunity to ask questions and to discuss the previous week's sermon. This gives you time to think and reflect for a week. It also gives people an opportunity to find out what they missed the previous week if they were unable to attend and hear the sermon and experience the theme of the day. **IS CHILDCARE AVAILABLE DURING OTHER EVENTS? Yes! Please note, however, that we are a small, but growing community. We need to plan for this week by week. We are committed to SAFE, meaningful, creative learning experiences for children for ALL of our meetings. If you are bringing children with you to any event, please RSVP so that we may be appropriately staffed, just as we are at the 10:30 a.m. service. *HOW ABOUT COMMUNITY SERVICE? Each Sunday morning we pause to take a "sabbath" (rest) from our complex lives. We gather together intentionally, from all walks of life. As a community, we hope to inspire and encourage each other through singing, special music, silence, prayer, readings from the Bible and other literature, and preaching, followed by a coffee hour, conversation, and sometimes a meal. We are not here to "rescue" or to "save" anyone. We do offer a "helping hand up" to those who are in periods of transition or crisis. This is a ministry in the spirit of Jesus who cared deeply about all human beings, including the poor, marginalized, oppressed, widows and children. *INTERGENERATIONAL ACTIVITIES? We have potluck meals after church at least once a month. In the summer we often have picnics and around holidays, many of us gather together. As members one of another, we care for each other and for our friends and neighbors on the Island. This includes people we have yet to meet and to become friends. OTHER ACTIVITIES? Yes, and much more! As we grow together, we look to where "the creative energies and opportunities are leading any of us. This is a "grass-roots" church, not a programmatic one. We are here to support you in your own creative expressions in this community. Do you have ideas? **Christmas caroling in the community **Christmas for Kids with the Alfred Clough Christmas **Christmas Eve services (more than one) **New Year's Eve gathering **Holiday meals **Book discussions **Poetry readings **Arts experiences **Music concerts **Going to movies and Island events as a group **Fundraisers for people in need **Bell choir **Opportunities for active participation in worship by readings, special music **And the possibilities we have yet to think about... WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE? We take the Bible seriously, not literally. We believe that truth comes to us in many ways and in many people. We are particularly informed and affirm a God of love expressed in the life and teachings of Jesus the Christ. OUR AFFIRMATION OF FAITH, HOPE, AND LOVE. We affirm this covenant together every week. "Love is the doctrine of this church, the quest for truth its sacrament and service is its prayer; to dwell together in peace, to seek knowledge in freedom, to serve human need, to the end that all souls shall grow into harmony with the divine. Thus do we covenant with each other and with God." WHAT ABOUT CHILDREN? Your whole family is welcome! We provide creative play childcare and plan to offer arts-based learning opportunities for older children during the worship service. Please let us know if you are bringing children so that we may be staffed appropriately. We are a SAFE CHURCH...which means that staff have been vetted and trained to work with your children. WHO IS WELCOME? Most people who attend this church are not Methodists. We have seekers from non-church as well as church backgrounds. We are not here to CONVERT you, we are here to COMMIT to you! The Stonington United Methodist Church is a diverse, INCLUSIVE-OF-ALL-PEOPLE community-based church. Everyone is a worthy of respect, acceptance, and love...NO exceptions! We stand in solidarity for human rights for all, period! HOW SHOULD I DRESS? Come in your comfortable clothes! This is not a fashion show; we are a community committed to love. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT WHEN I SHOW UP? Park next door to the church in the Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home parking lot. It is free. (Ignore the signs.) Come in the front door. You'll be greeted there with a smile and given a printed program for the service. We are casual, happy, and will be thrilled to meet you! You will find that this small, growing, inclusive & diverse community of people will offer you a warm welcome, a meaningful, practical living sermon using contemporary literature, stories, and the Bible.
